About Laura

Laura is a freelance theatre costume maker based in East London, UK. Her professional career spans over seven years of making for a range of productions including West End theatre, commercials, music videos and fashion editorials. Her industry experience includes work with the likes of Secret Cinema, Sarah Juliet Costumes, Shakespeare’s Globe and English Touring Opera.

Laura studied Costume with Performance Design at The Arts University Bournemouth, specialising in costume interpretation, and holds a First Class BA(hons) degree. Influenced by theatrical roots in her family, she chose to combine them with a passion for the finer details of garment construction.

Laura provides a range of skills and capabilities with her service. These include period garment interpretation, corsetry, ballet bodice construction, contemporary dance-wear, prop-costume making and advanced hand finishing techniques. Laura is also highly experienced in the use of industrial sewing equipment.

Laura’s background has involved a keen interest in costume and live performance from a young age. She grew up in a family heavily involved in the creation of Saturday theatre school productions in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Along with Fine Art, Art History and English, Laura studied A-level Textiles and Fashion at New College, Swindon and discovered a great passion for producing striking wearable art through the medium of stitch, print, dye and embellishment.

In her free time, Laura stitches her own outfits to exercise her skills and wear out and about. She also makes them in the interest of sustainability and avoiding the environmental impacts of fast fashion. Laura is also currently involved in working with The Pachamama Project – a charity that focuses on sewing re-useable sanitary products for people facing period poverty around the world.

Laura has a fully equipped home studio based in Leytonstone, East London. She is capable of home-working and in-house work dependent on the needs of the client. Laura is happy to travel to work on site and can provide additonal domestic machinery and equipment on request.
